Please note: After completing this application and the orientation process, you will become part of our pool of prospective poll workers. Your name will remain active until you request that it be removed. Not all poll workers work every election. The number of poll workers for each election is determined by the size of the election and the expected turnout. Poll workers are chosen to work a specific election by their availability, willingness to travel, and the number of workers needed. While we like to keep an election board constant throughout an election cycle, this often cannot be done.

POLL WORKER INFORMATION

If you are a former FRS employee and you retired within the last 12 months, you are ineligible to work as a poll worker until you have completed a 12-month retirement period. Please contact the Florida Retirement System at 1-866-446-9377 to verify how working as a poll worker will affect your FRS benefits.

Poll Workers play a crucial and essential role in the electoral process in St. Lucie County.

A dedicated team of over 500 individuals serve the voters of St. Lucie County during early voting and at polling places on Election Day. These civic-minded individuals are responsible for efficiently processing voters, providing assistance (including language support) and guiding voters on the proper use of the voting equipment. Their primary objective is to ensure the accuracy and fairness of elections.

To become a Poll Worker, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be a registered voter in St. Lucie County.
  2. Complete an I-9 employment eligibility verification form (effective January 2021, for new Poll Workers only).
  3. Provide a Social Security number, which will be required prior to employment and used solely for payroll eligibility.
  4. Possess fluent English reading, writing, and speaking skills.
  5. Attend mandatory training prior to working each election.
  6. Be available to work from 6:00 a.m. until approximately 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.
  7. Have reliable transportation for attending training sessions and working on Election Day.
  8. Meet physical requirements such as standing, bending, stooping, and lifting weights of 15 to 20 lbs.
  9. Remain non-partisan while serving as a Poll Worker.
  10. Not be a candidate, an immediate family member of a candidate, or actively involved in the campaign of any candidate with opposition in the election being canvassed (per F.S. 102.141).
  11. Be customer service oriented.
  12. Serve all voters promptly, courteously, and with sensitivity to voters with special needs.

 Positions available for Poll Workers:

The positions listed provide an overview of the responsibilities performed. Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities may be applicable for individual positions.

Clerk – Responsible for overseeing all operations at the polling place in compliance with Florida Law. They should be comfortable working with electronic equipment and act as the primary contact between the Supervisor of Elections Office and the polling place. The Clerk confirms the availability of Poll Workers to work and attend mandatory training sessions. The Clerk has additional responsibilities before Election Day and is accountable for the overall management, coordination, and supervision of tasks and activities during Early Voting and on Election Day. They also collect and return election supplies.

Assistant Clerk – Responsible for providing support to the Clerk in completing essential paperwork, including processing provisional and spoiled ballots. Must possess a general working knowledge of electronic equipment. Assists in conflict resolution. Must be prepared to assume the Clerk’s duties in case of an emergency. Accompanies the Clerk to return supplies on election night. Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Voting Equipment Technician – Responsible for opening and closing the polls on the Image Cast Evolution (ICE) tabulation unit(s). Must be comfortable working with electronic equipment. Positioned at the ICE Unit to provide guidance to the voters on how to use the voting equipment and assists in troubleshooting, when necessary. Collects secrecy folders from voters who have cast their ballots and hands out “I Voted” stickers. Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Inspector – Responsible for setting up and shutting down the electronic poll book system. Greets voters and verifies their identification and signature. Processes voters at check-in, using the electronic poll book. Guides voters who require additional assistance to the Clerk’s table. Collects voting passes from voters and ensures they receive the appropriate ballot. Additional responsibilities as assigned. 

Poll Deputy – Poll deputies are deputized by St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department, is always present while the polls are open. Responsible for properly marking the 150 ft “no solicitation” zone and ensures compliance. Additionally, the deputy sets up and removes directional signs outside the polling place, greets voters at the entrance to the polling place and maintains an orderly flow of voter traffic. Ensures that political activities conducted outside the polling site comply with all legal requirements. Additional responsibilities as assigned.
